what are the benefits of 3D scaning your collection?
3D scanning a specimen from your collection creates a highly detailed digital model of that specimen. This means the condition of that specimen at the moment of scanning is stored permanently and even if the physical specimen is damaged or lost, current and future academics still have a precise and detailed record of that specimen to study.
Having a digital version of your specimen means you can send it between researchers instantly and free of cost it also allows these researchers to digitally reconstruct fragments of fossil meaning theories can be tested quickly and easily without risking damage to the physical specimens.
Additionally to these benefits, we also offer additional services that use the 3D scans to create detailed replicas for display which you can learn more about in the Museum services tab in the menu.

Examples of previous 3D scans
A skull of a Neovenator salerii that was discovered on the Isle of Wight. The fossil was scanned for Dinosaur Isle and has been printed multiple times for museums in England, Germany and Japan. this scan is a recent example of the level of detail you can expect to recieve.
A fossilised sea scorpion (Eurypterid) scanned for a private collector.
The fossil was scanned using an earlier iteration of our RPC-S range as part of a selection we scanned in a batch.

An ammonite scanned for a private collector. this is a good exmple of the range of colour our scans can offer.
A skull and jaw separately from an Eurasian wolf (Canis lupus lupus) we scanned this for the University of Southampton.
it was scanned using our RTC-S120 as part of a collection of skeletal and taxonomic subjects.

A fish fossil scanned for a private collector. The fossil was scanned using an earlier iteration of our RPC-S range
this is a an example of a non fossil artifact that we scanned. It demonstates the varity that is possible
Common questions about our 3D scanning
what can we scan?
We can scan objects that range in size from a boat to a grain of rice and this process is contactless leaving no damage or marks on the object. This makes it a great option for small or delicate pieces as well as large detailed ones.

what will you receive from the scans?
Once these scans have been completed you will receive a digital file as well as a memory stick with that file on it for physical storage. With this scan, you will be able to view your object in 3D in full detail (and in colour if requested) and do things such as take measurements and inspect the piece without having to handle and potentially damage the real object. additionally, you will have full ownership of the files meaning you can transfer or sell copies of them at your discretion. this is useful if you want to send the files somewhere else for analysis.

how does the process work?
if you're interested in getting any number of objects in your collection scanned then click the Contact Us menu option at the top of the page and fill out the short form. a member of our team will get back to you quickly and we can discuss any further details. We will then send you a quote. Once it has been approved by you we will bring the equipment to your collection and scan the pieces.
